What if animals are communicating but we’re not listening?

I feel fortunate to have had a wonderful communication with animals and other living things at different times throughout my life. I have tremendous appreciation for their presence and hope that we as a society can continue to evolve to give them the space and respect they need to thrive and coexist with us.  Here are two of my favorite stories. - Carole Gan

Deer crossing

It was a quiet night driving home from the N.J. shore around midnight one Sunday night in the 1980s. No radio. Daughter asleep in the back seat. Husband driving. I got an image in my mind’s eye of a deer. I mentioned it and my husband said there weren’t any deer around. But then, about a mile down the road on t the right, still in the brush, was a large male. I believe they send out signals but we’re too distracted to hear it.

A message to head home

My mom, who was generally in good health at an assisted living facility on the East Coast, was admitted to the hospital for testing because she was having trouble swallowing. I was working in California and hadn’t really decided whether to travel back to visit. That same morning when I was stopped at red light headed to a meeting in Sacramento, a white egret flew right in front of my windshield, hovered for a bit — long enough for me to be shocked and say “Hi,” — and then landed on top of my SUV. It stayed there right in the middle of a busy street. The light tuned green and I slowly drove, turning a corner and passing people waiting at a bus stop. They, too, were amazed and were pointing at my car as I drove past. The bird eventually flew off, and I thought it might be related to my mom, so later that day I went into meditation, to look at the energy of the unusual incident. I saw that it was indeed related to my mom, specifically about my mom and I separating our energies. The image I received was like saltwater taffy being stretched apart. I also got the words peace and friend. I knew that meant my mom was going to pass away, so I decided to take family medical leave. I was able to be with her for a month before she died, the day after Valentine’s Day in 2014. Short iPhone video.
